Seal of Biliteracy
Dear Archbishop Borders School Community,
We are pleased to announce that effective January of 2023, Archbishop Borders School is the only school in the Archdiocese of Baltimore to award the Pathway to Biliteracy Seal. All students at Archbishop Borders School are engaged in our dual language immersion program; the Pathway to Biliteracy Seal is a series of awards that recognize a student’s success toward the achievement of bilingualism. Through our partnership with Boston College and its oversight of the Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools, high standards and qualification criteria are set for our school, which enable us to award the Pathway to Biliteracy Seal.
The Pre K 4 “Becoming Bilingual” award, which will be given to Pre K 4 students at the end of year ceremony, designates commitment to our program; this the first of three benchmarks. Engaging in the next two Biliteracy Seal benchmarks, listed below, is elective and based upon academic achievement, student interest and motivation, and teacher recommendation.
5th Grade: Elementary Pathway to Biliteracy Seal
Middle School Pathway to Biliteracy Seal
Current fifth and eighth grade students will be given the criteria and an opportunity for this distinction. Students who obtain the Elementary Pathway to Biliteracy Seal will be recognized with a certificate at the fifth grade rising up ceremony. Accomplishment of the Middle School Pathway to Biliteracy Seal will be recognized with a seal on the diploma as well as honors cord, displaying this distinction.
The achievement of the Biliteracy Seal will further highlight our students’ accomplishments as they continue on to high school, college, and in their future careers. Archbishop Borders School is excited to now recognize this aspect of our unique mission, highlighting academic achievement within our dual language program.
